Kings Park Chamber Of Commerce
January 2009 General Meeting

January 28th, 2009: Smithtown Town Council Member and 2008 Kings Park Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year, Ed Wehrheim conducts the swearing-in of the 2009 Officers of the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce.

Special Guest Speaker Ed Wehrheim
Smithtown Town Council Member

Pictured above Ed Wehrheim listens intently to suggestions made by Charlie Vita.

Smithtown Town Council Member Ed Wehrheim addressed the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce on the Revitalization of Kings Park's Main Street. Last August, representatives from the Smithtown Town Council, Council Members Ed Wehrheim and Pat Biancaniello met with representatives from the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce to discuss and brain storm ideas for creating a more pedestrian and business friendly downtown.

Council Member Wehrheim reports that the Smithtown Planning Department has put together a few conceptual plans and presented them at the January 2009 General Meeting of the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce with the help of Smithtown Town Clerk Vincent Puleo.

The revitalization projects discussed at the January 2008 Chamber of Commerce General Meeting: Installing and Updating Cross-Walks Along Main Street and the Expanding and Upgrading of Savatt Park to Help Promote Downtown Kings Park.

Install Cross Walks Along Main Street

"The speed limit is 30 MPH on Main Street, that means people actual go 40+", explained Kings Park Chamber of Commerce President Charlie Gardner, "We need to slow traffic down and provide safe crossing."

Town Council Member Ed Wehrheim recounted how one afternoon a motorist became inpatient waiting for a senior to walk across main street. "As soon as the light turned green, he started to lean on the horn."

The proposed cross-walks would be clearly labeled indicating that its a state law that motorists must stop for pedestrians in the cross-walk. Main Street in Kings Park is a State Road and any plan to make changes on that roadway would require New York State Approval.

(Click Image Below to View Details of Plan:)

Expand and Upgrade Savatt Park to Help Promote Downtown Kings Park.

Russ Savatt Park is currently located on Main Street in Kings Park next to Ralph's Italian Ices and comprised mainly of a few park benches, brick patio and a pass-through for automobiles entering and leaving the Kings Park Train Station. Ralph's Itailain Ices opened up in spring of 2008 in the former location of the Brown Dog Cafe. Pictured below is the doorway which opens to the Russ Savatt Park area from Ralph's Food Service Area.

"Ralph's Italian Ices was packed all summer long", explains Council Member Wehrheim and he went on to say that the park contributed to that success. "By enlarging the park, adding parking and removing the pass-through, its is hoped that more people will be attracted to downtown Kings Park as a destination.", Kings Park Chamber of Commerce President Charlie Gardner added.

Below are the concept plans for the proposed park. (Click on Image to View)

The stated objectives for the new park improvements are to provide an attractive space for gathering and events, create an authentic 1890's environment, increase pleasure walking on Main Street, have minimal maintenance costs, set a standard for future development, inspire renovation of nearby properties, help attract business to Main Street and act as a focal point for the downtown area.

Proposed at the center of the Russ Savatt Park is a kiosk detailing the history of Kings Park and the recreational opportunities available nearby. This past spring the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce completed installing the Kings Park History Plaques along the Hike and Bike Trail which outlines the Nissequogue River State Park and details the history of the former Kings Park State Hospital. This Kiosk appears to be right in line with that project and the very strong sense of history which is a vital part of the Kings Park Experience.

Who is Russ Savatt?

Pictured above at a Kings Park Fire Department Clam Bake in the late 1940's, Russ Savatt after who Savatt Park is named, was a true old school Kings Parker in every sense of the word. Russ was a Marine Corps Judo Instructor in World War II, member of the American Legion, founded the Kings Park Boys Athletic Club which focused on boxing, toured Europe as an accomplished acrobat, semi-pro football player, an active member of the Kings Park Volunteer Fire Department and owned and operated a barber shop for the better part of 40 years, just footsteps away from the park which now bears his name.

Kings Park Historian Kingsley Pedlar recalls, "Russ was the kindest, folksy person you would ever want to meet. You could walk by the shop, sit down and he would talk to you for hours, never losing that smile for a second. Russ was a very strong man although he only stood about 5 foot 4; In many ways he was one of the tallest men I have ever had the pleasure meeting. He was originally from McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania and although he never totally lost that Mill-Town accent, he was a true Kings Parker in everyway."

January 2009: Guest Speaker: Jim Mulvaney
Tactical Intelligence Services Inc.

Jim Mulvaney from Tactical Intelligence Services addressed the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce on the topic of  "Drug Detection and Prevention" in the Work Place.  Jim explains that by testing surfaces such as door knobs, keyboards and desks, it can be determined if anyone who touched these surfaces has used drugs recently.

The technology samples the oils inadvertently left behind when a person touches any smooth surface. "Its the same oils finger print powder adheres to when the police dust for finger prints at a crime scene.", explains former Newsday Reporter and Current President of Tactical Intelligence Jim Mulvaney.

"This test will not tell you who is using illegal drugs, but it will tell you that there is a problem and how wide spread it might be." Jim is currently working with several school districts to determine the extent of drug abuse in student population. Pictured below left is the device used in finger-print drug testing.

Kings Park Chamber of Commerce
4th Annual Tip-Off
Basketball Tournament

The best news from the 2008 Kings Park Chamber of Commerce Tip-Off Basketball Tournament is that the combined proceeds from the money at the door and the Chamber's sponsors will amount to more than $2,000 being donated to the Varsity Club. This money will be used for food, clothing and toys to be distributed to needy families in the Kings Park Area.

Just prior to the start of the games, recently retired Coach Gene DeGraw (Pop to his players) was honored by the fans and the team for his many years of coaching Kings Park players from grade school all the way up to the Varsity level.

The Opening Round featured Cardinal Hayes High School from the Bronx against St. Anthony's in the first game, won by St. Anthony's. As a note, one of Cardinal Hayes' Assistant Coaches is none other than Justin Simon, a Kings Park graduate who led our team to the County Basketball Championship games in 1999 & 2000. The second Opening Round game saw Kings Park defeat Half Hollow Hills West by a score of 67 - 47.

On Sunday, Hayes beat HHHW in the Consolation Game and Kings Park lost to St. Anthony's in the Championship final by the same score as the first game, this time on the losing end of a 67 - 47 battle. Kings Park senior Sean Fox was voted to the All-Tournament Team for his outstanding play in both games.

Kings Park Fire Department
Christmas Parade and Food Drive

The Kings Park Volunteer Fire Department and the People of Kings Park Celebrated the 27th Annual Christmas Parade and Food Drive on December 20th, 2008. "Its all about the Children!" remarked Steve Butler past Chief of the Kings Park Fire Department pictured above.

The Kings Park Fire Department's Volunteers decorate the Fire Trucks with time honored holiday decorations and tour the neighborhood giving candy to the children and collecting canned goods to help replenish the area food banks which are dangerously low. "The happiness and joy shows on the faces of all the children and dare I say, the adults too. It makes all the work worthwhile and reminds us all that we are one community, in both the best of times and tough times as well.", Remarked one firefighter who when asked his name replied, "Santa Claus!".

Pictured Above Larry Noon and his Wife Debbie, Larry speaks for all of Kings Park when he mentioned that "This Parade serves to remind us of the service and sacrifice that our volunteer firefighters make every day. Its during this holiday time when this service is often most needed and also the time when the sacrifice is most noticed by the families of the firefighters whose holiday celebrations are often interrupted for emergency calls. Thank You and Merry Christmas."

Chanukah Festival of Lights!

On December 14th 2008, the Kings Park Community Celebrated the Chanukah Holiday with the lighting of the Chanukah Menorah in Veterans Plaza on the grounds of the Kings Park Branch of the Smithtown Library. The larger than expected gathering of the faithful was a reminder that faith and family values are alive and well in Kings Park.

Pictured above with Smithtown Town Council Member Pat Biancaniello, Kings Park School District Superintendent Susan Agruso and New York State Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick, Kings Park Jewish Center's Rabbi Grossman reminded all that we must value all our freedoms here in America, especially our freedom to worship and with faith, together we can overcome the obstacles which may confront us in the future.

After the ceremony was complete at Veteran's Plaza, the festival moved across the street to the Kings Park Fire Department. Rabbi Grossman thanked the Fire Department for all their hard work, sacrifice and putting their lives on the line in service for our community.

The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce would like to take this moment to join with Rabbi Grossman and express our deepest gratitude to the Men and Women of the Kings Park Fire Department for their selfless service.

Smithtown Veterans Summer Youth Program!

The Smithtown Veterans Youth Program is an all volunteer effort to help mentor and provide a safe and fun environment for Smithtown's Young Adults during the summer months.

Hosted at the Sunken Meadow State Park Field 3, this popular event complete with rock bands, food, athletics and of course a volcano, is a welcomed break from the negative social situations today’s youth are so often are presented with on a daily basis.

Sunken Meadow Beach has a long history of providing a sanctuary for the area's young people. For many decades, before the early 1950's expansion of the State Park, St Johnland's Home for Children had a summer camp on the very spot which now is the home for the Veterans Youth Program.

With the help of local volunteers headed by Kevin O’Hare, Phil Sciarillo, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Suffolk County’s Finest – Suffolk County Police -  4th Precinct, this program has become one of the vital pillars of hope for a very complicated world.

Community is Hope!

Funding is difficult during this period of financial crisis. Hopefully with the help of our elected officials and hard working volunteers we can continue this much needed program during the 2009 summer.

William T Rogers School Beautification
Eagle Scout Project by Charles Mahoney

Pictured above Boy Scout Troop 539 with Kings Park School Representative Joe Trezza (right), in front of William T Rogers Middle School, the site of Charles Mahoney’s Eagle Scout Eagle Project.

Last month the newly installed Kings Park School District Superintendent Dr. Agruso unveiled the District’s 5 year Goals which at its core includes a beautification program for the schools of the Kings Park Central School District Number Five. This Eagle Scout Project which was funded and organized by Charles Mahoney and the Boy Scouts of America is one step in achieving those goals.

All Life Scouts working towards the highly coveted Eagle Scout Rank are required to perform a project which helps better their community and this one most certainly does. Our most heartfelt thanks to Charles Mahoney, Scout Master Lenny Santosus and the Boy Scouts of Troop 539 for their selfless service to our community.

LR-IMG_2851.jpg

“It was a lot tougher than I expected, the easy part was raising the funds, purchasing the material and organizing the work crews; the hard part was coming up with a plan that made sense for the school district.”, says Mr. Mahoney pictured above. “It was well worth the effort and the help Mr. Trezza from the School Grounds Crew provided was vital in our success.”

The Lost Camp Of St Johnland
Video By Steve Weber

King and Steve Search for the St Johnland Camp which was located in Sunken Meadow State Park in NY until 1951. St Johnland Home was a home for children which was Loc, each summer the children would walk to this rustic camp on the shores of the Long Island Sound to enjoy what nature had to offer and get away from the summer heat back in the St Johnland Home.

In 1951 Sunken Meadow was expanded and the camp was disbanded and the land claimed under eminent domain by Robert Moses and added to the New York State Park System.
