New Holiday Decorations

The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the membership successfully replaced the Holiday Decorations which have graced Main Street in Kings Park for Years. Chamber President Charles Gardner explained that last year, the weather surrounding the Holiday Season damaged most of the decorations beyond repair. The Chamber of Commerce solicited the local community as well as the membership and was successful in funding the replacement of these beautiful holiday decorations.

The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce has been a zealous advocate for Downtown Kings Park, recent projects included the safety improvements on Main Street, Construction of Savatt Plaza and the Summer Concert Series which features local bands performing in Savatt Plaza. In additional to supporting positive change in Kings Park, the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce has worked as an un-official liaison to the Town of Smithtown, assisting local business with advice and navigating through the permitting process which at times can be complicated for new business.

Happy Holidays to All!

KINGS PARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
November General Meeting

Assembly Member Mike Fitzpatrick with KP Schools Superintendent and KP Chamber President Charlie Gardner

 New York State Assemblyman
Michael Fitzpatrick

New York State Assembly Member Mike Fitzpatrick addressed the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce at the November General Meeting. Mr. Fitzpatrick detailed his plans to reform the pension system, specifically to explore converting the existing system from defined benefit to a defined contribution. The hardworking Assembly Member detailed that the current system is "unsustainable", going on to explain that by having the pension system modeled after a private sector 401k, we will be giving control back to the people who earned the money, have portability between employers and is a pay-as-you-go system, not shifting the cost to future generations.

Mike Fitzpatrick explained in addition to reforming the pension system, we will need to examine other cost controls including Modernizing the Triborough Amendment to the Taylor Law.

The Taylor Law removes the ability of labor units to strike, the Triborough Amendment to this legislation attempts to balance the no-strike provision with a requirement which preserves the terms of the expired contract until a new contract is in place.  Mike explained that this provision needs to be modified to exclude all increases in base pay. Right now even with an expired contract, some unions are getting 4-6% pay raises due to longevity and professional development steps. Raising the question; What incentive does a labor unit have to negotiate if they have this type of a pay raise in perpetuity?

Assembly Member Mike Fitzpatrick is a regular attendee at the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce Meetings, please be certain to attend our next general meeting and be part of our service to our Kings Park Community!

October General Meeting

Special Guest Speaker: Steve Bellone
Babylon Town Supervisor and Candidate for Suffolk County Executive

Democratic Candidate for Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone addressed the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce at the October General Meeting hosted at the VFW Hall in Kings Park on October 19, 2011.

During his comments to the Kings Park Community, Steve highlighted his plan to improve the local transportation by creating a program called "Connect Long Island" which Mr. Bellone believes is essential in creating a growing economy. "We have to figure out how to move people around without exclusively using automobiles". Key components include centering local downtowns around transit stations and improving the connections between these transit stations.

Essential parts of this plan include adding a second set of tracks to the Long Island Rail Road and improving North/South transit especially in the Route 110 Corridor. Supervisor Bellone explained that funding for this "Connect Long Island" project has not been established and was not prepared to discuss the details, but emphasized that Suffolk must invest in the local transportation system in order to grow.

Supervisor Bellone is currently serving his fourth term as Town Supervisor. He resides in West Babylon with his wife, Tracey and their two daughters, Katherine Ann and Mollie Elizabeth. Steve Bellone is a graduate of North Babylon High School and he earned a BA degree at Queens College in 1991, earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration by attending night classes at Webster University while serving as a communication specialist for the US Army and went on to earn his Law degree from Fordham University and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1999.

Angie Carpenter addressed the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce in September where she explained that she had her start in public service as a member of her local chamber of commerce.

KINGS PARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Kings Park Day 2011!

This past Kings Park Day was the most successful ever. The entire community came out for a day of fun in the sun. Old friends, new friends, yet to meet friends, that is Kings Park at its best.

Our special thanks to the Kings Park Fire Department for the cool shower from one of the pumper trucks which make the Fire Department a must stop for all in attendance. The Kings Park Fire Department has announced their 2013 Centennial Celebration which will be held at the WTR Middle School in August 2013. The celebration will be reminiscent of the Old Fireman Fairs which were the highlight of past Kings Park Summers for decades.

A special dedication was held at Veteran's Plaza for Kings Park's Larry Noon. According to Jennifer Sloat of Kings Park Patch, online newspaper:

Marine Corp Veteran Larry Noon was presented with a $37,457 check by Rep. Tim Bishop at the 2011 Kings Park Day in a ceremony he came close to missing.

“I only found out 40 minutes before I got here by seeing the story about me on Kings Park Patch,” said Noon. “I had no idea,” he said.

Noon who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and migraine headaches due to several shrapnel injuries approached Bishop’s office in November of 2010 for assistance in expediting his claim.

A grateful Noon acknowledged Bishop’s efforts saying it had been a struggle getting qualified for additional benefits. Gratitude for his hometown was evident as well.

“My community treats me like a hero. I have been here all my life,” said Noon.

Noon received the Purple Heart and a Navy Commendation for Valor for his service.

The People of Kings Park are grateful of all our veterans for their sacrifices, both past and present. The reason why we here in Kings Park have the freedom enabling us to live the American Dream is because of their selfless service, thank you.

 Kings Park Chamber of Commerce

Scholarship Presentation By Lino Bracco,
Principal Kings Park High School
June 1, 2011

The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce partnership with our school district has provided an increased educational and enrichment opportunities for our students aimed at improving levels of achievement, self-esteem, and understanding of the expectations of the work world.

Through your continued support to provide for our school, staff and students you have also increased our staff morale and enthusiasm for learning.

Let me take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your generous and sustained support of our student scholarship program. This afternoon we will award four seniors with a $1,000 scholarship which I am sure in today’s economy will go a long way.

Allison Kaminski

Our first recipient is Allison Kaminski. Academically Allison has mastered a demanding college preparatory curriculum which includes accelerated, honors, college level and AP courses. Being in the top 5% of her class she is an AP Scholar with Honors and an active member of the National Honor Society. She has placed first in the N.Y. Science and Engineering Fair. Her strongest areas are math and science.

Outside of the classroom, Allison has expanded her experiences through Independent Science Research, interning at Brookhaven National Laboratory and becoming involved with the school’s environmental and math clubs.

On a personal level, Allison is sincere, humble and a compassionate young lady who volunteers her time with beach cleanups, children’s summer reading programs, and even travelled to Costa Rica to do a community service project.

Brandon Reynolds

Our second recipient is Brandon Reynolds. According to his AP American History teacher, Mr. Kiernan, “Brandon always maintained a high level of excellence and he exhibited strong comprehension of the content matter. His critical thinking skills provided some of the best discussions in class last year and he was one of my strongest students.”

Outside of the classroom, Brandon is a dedicated athlete. As captain of the track team, Brandon demonstrated a great deal of determination and drive. Athletics along with his involvement in community service through his participation in National Honor Society have helped shape Brandon’s personality. He is an amiable and compassionate individual who is well respected by both his peers and the faculty.

Unfortunately, Brandon’s father suffered a debilitating stroke several years ago which left him physically disabled. Brandon stepped up to assist his family. His mother notes, “Brandon helps without a question, often without being asked to do so. He makes significant contributions to the household. He has shown maturity and understanding beyond his years.”

Breezy Smoak

Our third recipient is Breezy Smoak. In 2006 Breezy started her own line of clothing, “Smoakan Voltage” designing, sewing, wearing and selling her creations; she taught herself the art of riding a unicycle and has become an accomplished musician on at least five instruments including her most recent acquisition of a vintage accordion. Her most recent venture is an internship with the Long Island Arts Alliance where she will be the new photographer and media manager, visiting venues and posting updates on their website, twitter and facebook.

On the high school level, Breezy was selected President of the French National Honor Society. Academically, she has excelled in a demanding college preparatory curriculum.

She will be spending this summer in Paris, France as part of her studies while attending NYU next year.

Breezy is also an altruistic and community minded person who has been extremely successful in some local fund raising ventures. She is a leader, innovator and a terrific human being!

Michael Zucker

And last but not forgotten our final recipient Michael Zucker. If there is one word to describe Mike it would be commitment. In every aspect of his life; academics, athletics, volunteer work, employment, community service and family, Mike gives one hundred percent…… and it shows!

Academically Mike has mastered a demanding college preparatory curriculum as well. He has also received recognition for being chosen as an AP scholar, Student of the Year and Student of the month in English and Math. His teachers describe him as, “focused, conscientious someone who truly loves to learn, hard-working, respectful and always willing to participate and help others.

Outside of the classroom, Mike is a natural on the baseball field. Playing on travel teams for eight years plus varsity has made him an outstanding player. Mike also volunteers his time at St. John’s Nursing Home and with various community service projects in and out of school.

On a personal note, Mike is a sincere, honest and compassionate young man who is serious about his commitments, but also has a great sense of humor and outgoing personality.

Congratulations on your accomplishments!

KINGS PARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
May 2011 General Meeting!

Special Guest Speaker US Congressman Tim Bishop

Bishop addresses residents concerns about rising gas prices.

U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop was the guest speaker at Wednesday’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at the Veteran’s of Foreign War hall.

Bishop spoke on a variety of topics including national debt, government spending and rising gas prices with the later being the hot topic for most audience members with gas having surpassed the $4 mark.

“Oil companies, I think all corporations, have a responsibility to be responsible citizens,” said Bishop referring to the recent Senate hearings challenging Big 5 oil company profits.

According to Bishop, rising gas prices is a speculative driven problem.

“We have a set of policies that are encouraging the type of behavior you see at the pump,” he said. Bishop filed a bill that would take $3.5 billion a year of tax subsidies provided to the major oil companies and eliminate them. The Senate had a similar bill that was voted on Tuesday and was defeated.

“Why don’t we regulate it and put it back on the commodities market then? We have commoditized other utilities,” said one audience member. Bishop said he is asking Congress to crack down on speculation.

Questions on the gas tax were raised as well. “The government receives 0.18 cents per gallon and does nothing for it,” said Alex Barnych, and investor and counselor with David Lerner and Associates. “They (the government) are taking as much taxes in my house as they have ever taken.”

Bishop explained that much of the investments to our infrastructure come from that tax.

“The whole oil debate, there are only two numbers you need to know; we have two percent of the world’s reserves and we use twenty-five percent of the worlds oil. Those are the only two numbers you need to know…that says that we cannot drill our way out of this problem not short term not long term,” said Bishop.

Kings Park Post Office employee, Dennis Guinaw came to the meeting specifically to hear Bishop speak. “It was the first time I heard him speak. I thought it was good. I thought it was very informative.”

KINGS PARK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
April 2011 General Meeting!

The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce held the April General Meeting on 4/13/2011 at the VFW Hall in Kings Park. As always the focus of the meeting was Kings Park.

Special Guest Speakers Included NHL Skating Instructor Barbara Williams who detailed her efforts in creating a Skate Board Park, she explained that she often would see the children "hanging out" and at risk for getting into trouble. She asked, "What do you like to do besides hanging out?", the answer was loud and clear, "Skate Boarding". Barbara is working hard to make a skate board park a reality and admits that economic times are tough but she will not give up; Barbara has a long track record of being successful in her efforts on behalf of our children.

Jack Hessel spoke on the efforts of the local Civic Association's efforts to bring a farmers market to Kings Park and Live Music for Savatt Park in the newly renovated Kings Park Down Town Area.

Other speakers included the representatives from the Knights of Columbus, who detailed special upcoming Easter events and the newly appointed outreach coordinator from St. Catherine's Hospital spoke on the recent upgrades to the services offered by the hospital and their ongoing humanitarian efforts on behalf of the community.

Special Keynote Speaker was Dr Susan Agruso from the Kings Park School District who detailed the adopted Kings Park School Budget. The Kings Park School Superintendent explained that this budget is very lean and yet provides excellent educational opportunities for the students of Kings Park while being reflective of the difficult economic times we live in. For more information on the 2011-2012 Kings Park School Budget please visit the Kings Park School District Website.

The event was catered by Ciro's Restaurant, sadly there were no left-over's for the Chamber's Officers to take home! The Chicken was out of this world and the eggplant is second to none.

Our Special Thanks to Dee Grasso, Charlie Gardner and all the good people of the Chamber for their support of our community!
